Buzz Rodeo – Sports [Album Review]

buzz-rodeo-sportsOne thing immediately stood out for me with Sports; those guitars. So much so that I am getting straight to them in the introduction. At times, such as the within Sound Of The Universe, the tone and reverberation sound like they belong in an old 60’s/70’s record. At others, they almost drive the entire song on their own. And the rest they just power the album’s biggest moments.

Now, Buzz Rodeo make “art rock”. This is a funny genre of sorts, as you will always find different sounding elements all over the shop, and almost always a really rough edge here and there. Prime example would the contrast between the rhythm heavy songs like The Gap and the more punk/noise rock sounding Movie Star. This could put some people off, but if like me you are seeking something more unique, this is all more than welcome.

There are definitely some vibes kicking around with the lead guitars that sounds straight out of pop/rock songs from many decades ago, which makes Sports such an intriguing listen, especially being intertwined around upbeat moments which sound very much modern day. Brick Lane is probably the best at single handedly delivering the best example of both sides.

Buzz Rodeo are easily comparable to many of the good indie bands from the 80’s and early 90’s. The range of influences are evident and very much stuck to for the root sound. The result is a very enjoyable listen for those of you after something a bit different.

Sports isn’t about being catchy or bursting with energy, but it instead offers an ever changing blend of punk, noise rock and art rock sounds and styles. If that sounds like your kind of thing, check out a couple of songs and see what you think.
